Our Disciplines

ASA is the oldest and only major appraisal organization representing all appraisal specialists. ASA has been training professional appraisers since its precursor, the American Society of Technical Appraisers, began in 1936. Today, ASA is still the country’s only multidisciplinary appraisal society, providing its members the most solid grounding in the appraisal principles that underlie all classes of property: real, personal, tangible and intangible.

Gems & Jewelry

Independent valuation of diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry, including unmounted stones, contemporary and designer pieces, antique and period jewelry, Native American and other collectible ethnic jewelry, rough gemstones, gemstone carvings, and mineral specimens.

Personal Property

Personal Property includes tangible, movable assets that may be functional, decorative, or collectible in nature, ranging from fine art and antiques to furnishings and specialized items. This includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, photography, books, and related works of art and ephemera.

Personal Property also includes furniture, antiques, residential contents, and specialized items such as musical instruments, automobiles, coins, and other collectible objects. Appraisers may also provide valuation for decorative arts and functional objects across a range of periods and styles.

Real Property

ASA is a recognized leader in real property appraisal, with members providing valuations for a wide range of purposes, including sale, acquisition, taxation, eminent domain, insurance, and forecasting. Specialties include residential and commercial property, ad valorem and mass appraisal, timber and timberland, rural property, and going concern valuations. ASA’s Accredited Members and Accredited Senior Appraisers are among the most trusted professionals in the field, backed by more than 75 years of appraisal education and experience.

Business Valuation

Business valuation professionals provide independent, unbiased opinions of value for business concerns of multiple natures and sizes. They value intangible business assets such as copyrights, employment agreements, trademarks, securities, and goodwill. These professional appraisers prepare merger and acquisition studies, employee stock ownership plan feasibility analyses, and other similar financial studies. They may be involved in appraisals performed for estate and gift tax returns, buy-sell agreements, securities litigation, equitable distribution in matrimonial matters and many other purposes.

Machinery & Technical Specialties

Machinery & Technical Specialty appraisers include those who perform market or liquidation valuations for various purposes such as sale, acquisition, ad valorem tax, eminent domain, collateralization, insurance or residual forecasting. The MTS appraisal discipline is comprised of several specialties to include the appraisal of equipment and machinery, aircraft, marine assets, oil and gas, mines/quarries, public utilities and other fixed assets.

Appraisal Review & Management

The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) defines appraisal review as “The act or process of developing and communicating an opinion about the quality of another appraiser’s work that was performed as part of an appraisal or appraisal review assignment”.

ASA is leading the profession by offering two designations in Appraisal Review & Management (ARM), a discipline-specific Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) designation in appraisal review, and an ARM Certificate of Completion for non-ASA-appraisers or interested parties.

In addition to producing professional, USPAP compliant reviews, many ARM reviewers have experience in providing expert witness services and litigation support as well as managing complex multi-discipline assignments.
